Mix water and baking soda

Although rain can occasionally rid any smells or urine, it's best to regularly clean your artificial turf to keep it sanitary and odourless. While dedicated products exist that can remove any smells or stains from urine, you can actually accomplish the same results simply using water and vinegar.

Mix a one-to-one solution of white vinegar and water. Using a sponge, rub the solution onto the stain. Let it sit for 5-to-10 minutes, and then wipe it up with a clean, dry towel. Some experts advise using a more diluted formulation of 1/2-cup vinegar to one gallon of warm water.

The good news is that artificial turf drains even better than natural grass. The backing on artificial grass is designed to be extremely porous and will let even more water through to the underlying soil than natural grasses.

The cheap alternative? Just use nails – a lot of them. This is a perfectly viable seaming method for some installations, though not quite as secure. Nails can and often do work loose over time and with enough foot traffic, so we only recommend this method if your grass isn't going to get a lot of that.

Silica sand is an infill you'll often see in artificial turf setups. The material resembles sand, but it's made of silica. While it's necessary to stick to the instructions, this sand is perfectly safe to use with artificial grass. Silica will assist in keeping the blades upright and ensure there's no wrinkling.

We recommend infilling a newly laid synthetic lawn with kiln dried sand. It is a procedure that helps to keep the fake turf in place, minimising the chance of ripples appearing. It also protects the fake grass fibres and keeps them upright. Choose weed-free sand to keep vegetation at bay.

How deep do you dig for artificial grass? ›

For domestic applications, we recommend a minimum depth of 50mm (2”). For commercial or public areas, such as artificial grass at schools and playgrounds, we recommend installing a sub-base of between 75mm to 100mm (3” to 4”).

Generally speaking, an ideal time to have artificial turf installed would be during the fall season. Having artificial turf installed in preparation for the spring and summer months is a great idea. And statistically, the cooler months (December through February) are less busy for contractors.
